A Healthier All Beef Burger? It DOES Exist at Lokal in South Miami!

If you're someone who loves a good burger but is also concerned about what you put into your body, the next time you are in Miami, you should definitely head over to Coconut Grove and check out Lokal Burgers & Beer - a restaurant devoted to supporting local food and markets while serving the freshest and healthiest menu choices.

Coconut Grove is known for its Bohemian style, so opening a burger joint in the town was a pretty bold move. Owner Matthew Kuscher knew that he needed to create the type of food that was natural, unprocessed and free from preservatives and other additives.

Nothing but grass-fed Florida beef, free range chicken, fresh fish and produce bought from local markets is used at Lokal. All of the meat is processed in-house as is free from steroids, antibiotics and hormones. The beef is ground by hand and each patty is also hand-pressed.

To appeal to the environmentally conscious attitude of Coconut Grove residents, Lokal became the first restaurant in the entire Miami-Dade area to use 100% clean, renewable energy sources from wind and solar power. Not to forget the art aficionados, the entire place - even the bathrooms - are covered with local art. There's definitely a cool, laid back vibe to the place and the staff is just as friendly and inviting as the atmosphere.

Of course, appealing to the whims of a neighborhood is one thing; delivering a fantastic meal is quite another. Fortunately, Matthew Kuscher has been able to do both. Just three years after opening, Lokal is already receiving recognition for having the best burgers in the Miami area as well as accolades for some of their other outstanding fare.

Because the words "burgers" and "beer" are featured in the logo of the place, I have to start off with the burgers. Sure, you could get a regular old classic burger but you're in "the Grove;" go with something a bit different! The "Fidy-Fidy" burger is super popular. It is half Florida pure ground beef and half smoked bacon from Miami Smokers in Little Havana. It is topped with Monterey Jack cheese and a special sweet onion marmalade and served with Fidy-Fidy fries (half regular potato fries and half sweet potato fries).

Other notable burgers are "The Lokal," which features melted Jack cheese, a locally produced honey mustard sauce and Homestead avocados. "Frita by Kush" is also a super popular burger. It's topped with guava jelly, melted Gruyere, crispy bacon and stuffed with potato sticks. There's even a burger served on a donut called "My Childhood Dream" as well as a veggie burger that even meat lovers claim is one of the best burgers they have ever eaten!

The other half of Lokal's logo is "beer" and they certainly don't disappoint when it comes to excellent choices from local microbreweries as well as a few outstanding brews from other areas. A half dozen selections are available on tap, about a dozen bottled beers from various local and other domestic microbreweries and another half dozen of some of the world's best beers are available in bottles as well. You won't find anything mainstream here! For those who prefer wine, there are nearly a dozen wines to choose from, as well.

Of course, Lokal isn't just about burgers and beer. Miami New Times as well as anyone who has ever tried the Chicken and Waffles say that they are the best that Miami has to offer! Zagat says their fish tacos are some of the best in all of South Florida! Various sandwiches and fresh salads top off the small, but excellent menu.

Save room for dessert! The Lokal Key Lime Pie may be the best you've ever tasted and the
Puertorican Tres Leches - a flan cake-like milk concoction made with three kinds of milk, topped with fresh berries, bananas, caramel and whipped cream - will have you addicted and returning again and again just for the dessert!

I would be remiss if I forgot to mention that Lokal is definitely a dog-friendly place. There is an outdoor seating area for you and your pet and even a doggy menu made especially for canines to choose from!

Located at 3190 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, FL 33133, Lokal is open during the following hours:
  • Monday-Tuesday: Noon to 10:00 pm
  • Wednesday-Saturday: Noon to 11:00 pm
  • Sunday: 10:00 am to 10:00 pm (brunch served from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm)
